5 must see Christmas markets in Prague for mulled wine

Prague was listed as the number one place for a Christmas holiday by news magazine U.S. News & World Report. Experience the Advent atmosphere in the snowy city of 100 spires, follow the scent of mulled wine and stroll through Prague’s Christmas markets.

Here are 5 tips where you can experience, enjoy and taste the seasonal spices of Prague.

 Old Town Square Christmas Market

Old Town Square, Prague 1

The most famous Christmas market in Prague is definitely the one at the Old Town Square. The CNN news server ranked the Christmas market at Old Town Square among the top 10 in the world. The main theme of the Old Town Christmas market in 2017 is the history of Prague to commemorate the city’s historical figures and events, such as Emperors Charles IV and Rudolf II, Rabbi Loew and Franz Kafka.

Prague Castle Christmas Market

Pražský hrad, Praha 1 – Hradčany, náměstí U Svatého Jiří, access from U Prašného mostu Street.

Prague Castle meets Christmas! The tradition of holding a Christmas market at the seat of the Czech presidents began two years ago when the Christmas markets finally used the space of the largest castle complex in the world and began attracting visitors with a high-quality range of carefully selected products. The friendly vendors will put you in a good mood, even if you don’t buy anything. Prague Castle has never been so cosy.

What to buy: mulled wine, hot sausages, trdelník (special pastry)

Christmas market at Anděl

Nádražní Street, Prague 5, Anděl metro station

Looking for a traditional Christmas market without the usual tourist souvenirs? Then try the Advent market at Anděl – I think it’s one of the most typical local markets there is. It offers a wide selection of regional farmers’ products and refreshments. You can also get some great gift ideas here, such as ceramic and wooden products, decorations, Advent wreaths, candles and toys. Experience and taste the real atmosphere of a local Christmas at reasonable prices.

What to buy: regional mulled wine, pastries, local farmers’ products, seasonal flower decoration, Christmas trees and carp.

(Czech) Advent market at Náměstí Míru (Peace Square)

Náměstí Míru, Praha 2

If you need a small break from your Christmas shopping, then try the grilled meat or sausages or satisfy your sweet tooth with apple strudel, gingerbread, cookies, waffles, roasted almonds, cotton candy at Náměstí Míru… You can also have some mulled wine and punch and sing Christmas carols under the big Christmas tree.

What to buy: lavender mulled wine, punch, Czech wooden ornaments, sweets, medovina (mead)

(Hidden) Christmas market at Národní třída

Spálená 22, Praha 1

Do you prefer less crowded Christmas markets where you have some space for yourself? Then check out this “hidden” market just in front of the moving Kafka statue behind the Quadrio business centre. This “oasis” of calm away from the crowded places will surprise you with its atmosphere of privacy!

What to buy: mulled wine, light refreshments
